Museum Cafe (Jonker Dessert 88)

This is probably the most popular food outlet along the famous Jonker Street in Malacca. It has quite a number of offerings. Pernakan style food, desserts as well as home-made kuih are among the delicacies served in this shop.

There are 2 stalls on the outside. One serves a variety of noodle-based dishes, as well as some finger food. The other stall serves desserts, namely ais kacang and chendol.
Whenever I am around the area, I would definitely drop by for the chendol. Just like any other chendol, it comes with the green chendol jelly, ice, santan and red beans. But the best thing about it is the thick gula melaka (palm sugar) that they pour on the top. Mmmmmmm, that is what makes it special. Of the late, I've been asking them to add more sugar. However, I find that their quality isn't very consistent. On one day, the santan didn't really taste that nice, making the dish pretty bland. The next day when I went back, the santan was creamy and tasty. Among the other dishes that they also serve are ais kacang, Eight-Precious Chendol (I have never tried it before, but it looks like it comes with 8 variety of ingredients) and mango and durian flavoured ais kacang/chendol.

As I mentioned earlier, the other stall serves noodle dishes. I've only tried the Nyonya Asam Laksa and the Baba Laksa. Among the two, I very much prefer the Asam Laksa. As the name implies, this one is a little bit sour. It comes with rice noodle, tuna, prawn, half an egg, wanton and some sliced cucumber and onion on the top. I don't think I have tasted a dish like this anywhere else, so it is definitely worth a try. The Baba Laksa is very much like the curry mee that you can get elsewhere. It comes with meehoon, tuna, tahu-pok, loh-bak, prawn and sliced cucumber and onion. Most of the people that have tried this said that it isn't as good as the Asam Laksa.
Inside the shop, they serve a variety of kuih-muih, as well as some home-made dishes. They also have some historial artefacts and relics on display inside the shop.

Overall, the Museum Cafe serves up some pretty decent meal, and I highly recommend the cendol.

Opening hours: They open around 9-10am. Not exactly sure what time they close, but on the day they have the night market, they were still open at 10pm.

I learnt that 'Satay Celup' was originally innovated by the first generation of Capitol Satay Celup Restaurant operator in Melaka – The Historic City more than 60 years ago. This dish consists of an assorted raw food ranging from chicken, cockles, abalones, mushrooms, vegetables, quail’s eggs, shrimps, bean curds, some fried bean curd/tofu by-products, fried flour dough or locally called 'yu-char-kuey', white breads and cubed cucumber. Displayed and served in a refrigerated counter, I guess there are easily more than 50 odds of type to pick from.

Choose your favorite and it is indeed an amazing dining experience in Melaka. These raw materials are placed on bamboo skewers and then dunk in spicy boiling peanut sauce to cook. The semi-fried or bread can be eaten directly by dipping them in the thick and aromatic peanut sauce.

The secret of 'Satay Celup' lies in the peanut sauce served. It is a thick and full of crunchy ground peanuts. Comprising of 22 ingredients and spices (as reported by The Star Street Food guide) including peanuts, dried chilli, onion, garlic, lemon grass, brown sugar, turmeric, galangal and sesame seeds, they are cooked together to perfection. As we got seated, a stainless steel pot with peanut sauce was placed in the middle of our table right into the round hole.

Underneath was a gas cooker to continuously warm and boil the peanut sauce. As the sauce started to boil, a waiter came and added in more freshly crunched peanuts and brown sugar. He also kept stirring till the bottom to avoid any sedimentation of the peanut chunks in the pot.Don't leave Melaka without trying 'Satay Celup'. This dish is considered a signature dish in Melaka so complete your trip with this dining experience! If time and queuing are not your forte, you may alternatively pick other 'Satay Celup' operators in town like Ban Lee Siang.

Bukit China Mee Rebus

First of all, I don't think the stalls that I am about to mention have any official name to them. Since it is located at the fringes of Bukit China, so I just call them with reference to Bukit China.There are 2 stalls here. One sells Mee Rebus, Rojak and Mee Rojak. The other stall sells only Cendol.

I believe that this dish is popular in the southern part of Malaysia, namely Johor and Melaka. It can be found in other states, but I don't see it very often. I grew up in Johor, and there is this great Mee Rebus stall that moved a few times till I have lost track of where it is now. If I remember correctly, it started out at the stall in the old Jalan Trus bus station, and later moved to Kotaraya. Since then, I have never tasted (or smelled for that matter) a delicious Mee Rebus till this one at Bukit China.

When the dish arrived, the smell of it was really nostalgic. Even before tasting it, I could already tell that this is gonna be really delicious. And true enough, this is the best Mee Rebus that I have had in a very long time. The kuah is thick and tasty. The ingredients are served at just the right amount. Not too much taugeh as some I have eaten before. The friend flour thing (I'm sorry I can't remember what it is called) is just nice, not too tough. I used to not like eating the chopped green chilli, but this time, I pretty much appreciate it as it adds to the aroma and taste.

The cendol is the only drink/dessert served here. It is quite good, especially after a delicious meal of Mee Rebus. And the prices are pretty reasonable as well. The Mee Rebus costs RM2.00, and the cendol costs RM1.00.

And the most interesting part is that you will be eating among the "dead". As many of you know, Bukit China is now a Chinese cemetary. The tables are laid out among the graves. OK, I'm not exactly sure if they are authentic or not, as there are no markings on the stone. But it does add some spookyness and "spice" to it. However, there are some real graves a stone's throw away from the stall.

The map below is an approximate location of the stalls. The nearest landmark that I saw is the Hang Li Po well, which is not far from it.
There is only one word to describe the experience: Heavenly!

Tips: Go as early as 11 am on weekend to avoid long queues.

Chop Chung Wah owns a simple and clean facade with only one entrance into the coffee shop. The signboard is placed high that you may not notice when you are too near. If you are walking from Dutch Square where the red buildings like Christ Church or Stadthuys are situated, keep look up on the right hand side of a white color building. Chung Wah is exactly on the right corner after crossing over Melaka River by Tan Kim Seng Bridge.
From Tan Kim Seng Bridge, the yellow signboard on your right is Chung Wah Coffee Shop.
Standing at the entrance, you will notice a traditional Chinese name plate hanging high above an arch, describing the name of this shop usually implies it could be a family business run over generations.

Ole Ole Baba Nyonya

In my quest to search for delicious cendol througout the country, I was brought to this shop in Malacca. It is located close to Mahkota Parade in Malacca town. However, as it is located along a row of shop houses behind the main road, this place is not that easy to find.

Ole Ole Baba Nyonya is located along Jalan Plaza Mahkota 3, a row of shop houses beside the new Newton Food Court, a stone's throw away from Mahkota Parade and the newer Pahlawan shopping centre. It is located adjacent to Restoran Nyonya Suan and seems to be owned by the same owner.

Cendol seem to be the popular dish here. At first look, it seems pretty normal. Crushed ice with gula melaka on the top. However, after mixing it up, mmmmm, it tastes really delicious. The santan (coconut milk) is thick and fresh, and the gula melaka seem to go well with it. Hard to pin point exactly what makes this dish so nice, but the excellent blend of everything makes this dessert extremely enjoyable to eat.

If I were to compare this cendol with the one at Museum Cafe (Jonker Dessert 88), other than consistency which I can't say as I've only eaten this one once, I would say that the one at Ole Ole Baba Nyonya is slightly (only slightly) better than the one at Museum Cafe.

Steamed and Roasted Breads at Siang Chiang Kopitiam.

Though wholemeal bread is undoubtedly more enriched in terms of nutrition facts, but it can never replace the role of the traditional white bread for making steamed bread with butter and kaya spreads. Combination of butter and kaya spreads is known locally as kahwin.
Where in Melaka is your favourite kopitiam?
When I’m back to Melaka during weekend, I like to visit Siang Chiang for breakfast. Siang Chiang is one of the authentic (non Halal) kopitiams in Melaka town, which is still preserving the heritage feel.

Though the shop house is undeniably an old building, but the interior hygiene is very well kept. The while tiles on the wall appear clean, and most importantly, the kitchen where breads, eggs and drinks are made is also hygienic and neat.
Pricing wise, very reasonable. My gf and I ordered a se of roasted breads, a set of steamed breads, a cup of tea, and a cup of Milo; all made up to RM4.90. Comparing to the modernized franchised kopitiams, really a big difference.

At Siang Chiang, there are a few more stalls rented to other hawkers to serve other types of food. Among all the stalls, the most notable one that I would like to mention, is the one that sells mee hun kuey (pan mee) and mee sua. I like to eat the mee sua in dry broth, which comes with 5 fresh prawns at RM3.50.

The Melaka River or Sungai Malacca can be seen as the beginning of Malacca history, when it was called ‘Venice of the East’ by the Europeans who traveled to it. Its historical importance also lies in the fact that, during the 15th century, the Prince Parameswara of Sumatra created his Sultanate at the entrance to this river. It was on the east bank, at the bottom of Malaccan Hill (now known as St. Paul’s Hill), where he placed his palace. On its route to the sea, the Melaka River travels pass the town of Malacca; many old villages, along with present day buildings, line its banks. It is of no surprise that for these reasons the river passage was an important route for major trade and commerce.

The Melaka River Cruise

There is now a 45-minute cruise that goes along the Melaka River which visitors find exciting and informative. It is said to be a good bargain and the 10 kilometer Melake River Cruise takes off at the mouth of the river, at the Dutch Square, and it travels all the way to Kampung Morten. The Tan Boon Seng Bridge is seen along the way, and it is important to point out its immense historical importance. The Portuguese used this bridge to capture the state; they divided Melaka in half and cut off communications in between.

That’s not all as there are two more important bridges to go! The Chan Boon Cheng Bridge is seen further along. Constructed in 1908 and rebuilt in 1963, it is a steel bridge that links the older Chinatown (Kampung Pantai) with the new Chinatown (around the Jalan Bunga Raya). Later on there is the Ghostbridge of Malacca, for pedestrians, that links Kampung Hulu with Jalan Kee Ann and the old Central Market. This pedestrian bridge was originally used for fishing trade and there are many Chinese restaurants in the area for this reason. One of the restaurants is now famous because it was used in Entrapment, a movie produced by Hollywood.

Other highlights of the cruise are the old homes and warehouses that are built on both sides of the river. High tide is the only time in which it is available, so visitors should plan ahead to fit this into their schedule. The Central Market is nearby and visitors can also see the Jalan Hang Tuah Bridge that links Jalan Munshi Abdullah with Jalan Hang Tuah. There was a theatre called the Cathay Cinema, but it is now closed. To the left of it is the Express Bus Terminal for Jalan Kilang. Buses can be taken to any other part of Malaysia at a reasonable price and old shops line the street in a quiet manner.

The last destination on the cruise completes the trip wonderfully. It is Kampung Morten, a very old village. It is a national heritage site that is well taken care of and its beauty lies in the traditional Malay architecture, reflecting older lifestyles and culture. The Melaka River Cruise is a major tourist attraction and since it allows visitors to enjoy history in a much more entertaining way, it is a picture of the Melakan State at its best!

The Melaka River Cruise is centrally located and so it is easily accessible from anywhere in Melaka using just a taxi or a trishaw.

There are 18 boats available which can accommodate 20 to 40 people. The boats will leave every 30 minutes. Price : Adult RM 10.00 and Children RM 5.00.

We can say where ever we go we can find Curry and Noodles because Little India and China Town are almost everywhere in the world. This including Melaka. Jalan bendahara and Jalan Temenggong intersection in Bandar Hilir are famous for it’s Indian origin shophouses. We can call it Melaka Little India. It is little compared to little India in Penang, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. So it suit the name little India.

When talking about Little India, everyone knows there will be their trademark Saree’s, dhoti and colorful women accessories. Foodstuff? A home made curry powder, Indian snacks like achi marukku and vadai. Yes, Banana Leaf rice is available here

With Deepavali just around the corner, Little India at Jalan Bendahara once again bustling with activities and traders selling the festive utensils, flowers and more cookies. Enough said, where ever you go, Little India we see here will be the same like other Little India at other part of the world. They work hard to preserve their identity from early days till now.

VISIT MELAKA HISTORICAL SITES ON A RED DOUBLE DECKER BUS

Since early May 2007,visitors and local Malaccans can tour the historical sites of Melaka by travelling in a red double decker bus.

The promotional fare is only RM 5.00 per person per day. Visitors can hop off at a historical site and hop on again on the next bus to another historical site.

Besides this double decker bus, another bus under Panorama Melaka single decker bus takes passengers to outskirts of Melaka. Costing only RM 2.00 per person for a day fare, you can go to Melaka Sentral, Melaka library, Melaka Hospital etc.

A staging point for visitors to take these buses is at Renaissance Hotel at Jalan Bendahara located within the Melaka New Chinatown area. The exact stop is No.13 located in front of Hotel Orkid and Accordian Hotel.

Another staging point which you can either take the Double Decker Bus or the Panorama Bus is in front of the old Majestic Hotel at the end of Jalan Bunga Raya.

The operating hours are from 7.00am to 10.00pm daily. Double Decker bus will come just after the hour while the Panorama Bus comes at half past the hour.

Portuguese Settlement

This square is also known as 'Mini Lisbon'. Located within the Portuguese Settlement, the square is the centre of Portuguese culture in Melaka and in Malaysia.
The small kampung, or village, around the square is the heart of Melaka's Eurasian community, descended from marriages that took place between colonial Portuguese and Malays some 400 years ago.
There are occasional performances of Portuguese dances and music. There is a bulletin board at the square that lists upcoming cultural events. But even on days when there is no performance, the square is a delightful place to go to for a meal and a drink and view the sunset over the Straits of Melaka.

Key Tips
The square can get quite lively on weekend nights with al fresco dining and live music. Possibly, the best place to go for fun on a weekend night in Melaka.

How to get there
By Taxi
The Portuguese Square, or Medan Portugis, as it is also known, lies 3km east of town. The best way to get there and back is by taxi. They are ample and cheap.

Many people stop at Alor Gajah on the way to Melaka. This is the place where the locals call it - "A'Famosa Resort."

A'Famosa Resort consists of a resort, in the forms of bungalow and apartment, a golf course, an Animal World Safari, a Water World, a Cowboy Town and a Flying Club. This gated community along the highway provides a lot of local and overseas visitor the enjoyment of having all in a place.

Located on 150-acre piece of fine land, the Animal World Safari houses over 100 species of animals. It lets you encounter the wildlife in the closest possible condition - in a gated truck!
Take this ride with experienced tour guide to share with you the different types of animals and their origins along the journey. You will start off with seeing some camels, ostriches, giraffes and spotted deer followed by lions, tigers, bears and a lot of other species. The entire journey takes about half an hour.
There are four shows scheduled every day for you to experience how intelligent animals are when they are well trained. Enjoy the Elephant Show, the Multi-Animal Show, the Bird Show and the Wild Wild West Cowboy Show!
There are some walk-through areas where you can touch the animals, like ponies and horses, flamingos and many others. The area is well landscaped and perfect for a slow and relaxing walk.
You can also take cruise to the Monkey Island, located in the middle of a lake. The islet has a few different types of monkeys, squirrels and wild chickens. You can feed them with food provided by the ground staffs during mealtime.
The last stop should be at the Farm House, which is like a petting zoo. It houses chickens, goats, sheep, geese and ducks and others like the green iguana, cats and dogs. This is the zone where you can play with some of the animals and touch them if you like.
Overall, it's a well-covered World Safari which offers excellent experience for animal lovers!

Eye on Malacca

Situated on the banks of Melaka River, just opposite the old Cathay Cinema near Jalan Hang Tuah Bridge, the 25 metre high Eye on Malacca is Malacca’s latest tourist attraction. It is expected to be bigger than Taman Tasik Titiwangsa’s Eye on Malaysia, as two other attractions have been added on to it, a trampoline bungee and a pirate ship – which can be experienced as a bundled deal along with a ride on the Eye on Malacca.

Ayer Keroh Recreational Forest

The 359-hectare Ayer Keroh Recreational Forest was opened on April 17, 1984 and offers visitors peace and tranquility within its cool green surroundings.

Recreational facilities include the Prehistoric Garden, the Storyland, children's playgrounds, the Orang Asli (Aborigines) Park, Deer Park, suspension bridge, observation towers, picnic spots and refreshment kiosks.

Joggers will love this place with its three jogging tracks and a par course; and for trekkers, there are many well-marked trails throughout the forest.

Many of the trees are labelled to facilitate identification; birds and insects can be spotted from the many observation towers and tree houses scattered throughout the forest.

There is also a 10-hectare camping ground with basic facilities like water and electricity, barbecue pits, special areas for campfires and scout jamborees, and a par course.

Campers are charged RM10 per day for a group of 10; for groups of less than 10, the fee is only RM5 per day.

If you're looking for more comfortable accommodation, there are cabins equipped with kitchenette at RM30 per night. There are also huts at only RM5 per night, but you have to bring your own gear.

A' Famosa Water World

Especially designed for family recreation, this 8-hectare theme park is fully equipped with international-standard facilities. Thrill seekers can check out the high-speed water slides and water scooters.
For the youngsters, there is the 'Arabian Village', a brightly-coloured playground inspired by Moorish architecture with its onion-shaped domes and minarets. There's hours of fun as they climb up the steps, go through water tunnels or slide down water tubes and slides into the pool below.

Tanjung Tuan Recreational Forest

Tanjung Tuan Recreational Forest is located in the administrative area of Alor Gajah Municipal Council (MPAG) and is bordered with Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan. It is about 20 minutes by bus from Melaka Town. The beach is a newly established recreational area for the whole family.
Various activities can be done here such as picnicking, boat riding, kite flying and swimming (at own risk). There are services like horse riding but it is chargeable.
Every morning, residence from the vicinity come to the beach to catch 'geragau shrimp' (a very tiny shrimp), which is in abundance from August to October. This activity is seasonal according to the monsoon wind.
'Geragau' shrimp is very popular in Melaka. They are made into 'belacan' (shrimp paste) and 'cencaluk' (shrimp sauce).
Every Sunday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, there is a free "Dondang Sayang" performance.
There is a lot of food and fruits stall along the beach. This beach promises serenity and tranquility to relieve stress after a hard week of work.

MISTERI PULAU BESAR MELAKA

Melaka Crocodile Park has more than 100 species of crocodiles, including albinos and hunch-backed crocodiles, in their almost natural surroundings.
Visitors will be able to watch special and exciting performances by the trained keepers and their crocodiles every Saturday. These heart-stopping performances will definately have you at the edge of your seat.
There is also a section of the farm set aside for honeybee rearing. Although the bees do not harm people, do be careful when passing through the area.

HISTORY
Zoo Melaka was originally established by the Melaka State Government in 1963 atop 54 acres (21.2 ha) in Ayer Keroh as a fledgling tourist destination.

In 1979, management of Zoo Melaka was transferred to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) and officially opened to the public by previous Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on 13th August 1987. Since then, the Zoo has become a member of the South-East Asian Zoological Park Association (SEAZA) and an active member of the Malaysian Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria (MAZPA).

Located approximately 13 km from Melaka city center, the Zoo progressed rapidly to become the second largest zoological park in the country. It was the first Zoo in the region, for example, to exhibit the critically endangered Sumatran Rhinoceros and Gaur. The Zoo is also renowned around the world for its Malayan Tiger captive breeding program. In tandem with global trends, Zoo Melaka has also adopted a more “Open Zoo” concept with its newer exhibits as it continuously upgrades its exhibits.

The Zoo currently features a handsome collection of more than 1,200 animals from the world over. Representing more than 200 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

To excel in terms of wildlife management and conservation, which will contribute towards conserving the nation’s biodiversity, and a product of eco-tourism.

To lead ex-situ wildlife conservation program hence, to be an excellent reference center (in terms of zoo management) in the region.

Zoo Melaka also functions as a center for wildlife research, conservation breeding, zoo education center and a popular tourist destination along the following areas:

Captive Breeding – Zoo Melaka functions as the major ex-situ breeding center for PERHILITAN. In this program, breeding stocks, especially the locally threatened species have been bred in captivity. These species include the tiger, panther, tapir, serow, barking deer, sambar deer and many others.

Research - Research carried out also emphasized medical research/treatment and behavioural studies. Zoo Melaka also provides support for other researchers from PERHILITAN and other institutions of higher learning.

Education - The program is designed to create awareness amongst the general public on wildlife and conservation. Among activities organized are lectures, video presentations, publication of printed material and signage posted at all exhibits in the zoo.

Recreation – Zoo Melaka also provides an inexpensive recreation activity for local tourists. Promotions have been carried out to attract more visitors and hence generate more revenue towards the welfare of the animals and the development of a highly popular tourist destination

Melaka Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary

Another attraction in the Ayer Keroh area that should not be given a miss is the Melaka Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary, which houses dozens of beautiful butterflies, from various species. Feel free to walk around in the aviary to catch a close glimpse of the various butterflies in their habitat.
Apart from butterflies, visitors can also view various species of reptiles including snakes, spiders, scorpions and hundreds of insects that will undoubtedly make the weak heart squirm. A closer look at these reptiles on display, especially the various species of snakes, will undoubtedly leave a visitor in awe, if not more respect for the often misunderstood reptile.

Trishaw Ride

The best way to enjoy Melaka in a slow and laid back manner is by walking along the streets of Melaka. But, if you want to experience a different view, trishaws will come in handy. The trishaw will take you through streets and corners of Melaka's historic city center that you could easily miss out if you decide to venture on your own. The trishaw can be rented on hourly or distance covered basis at The Stadthuys.
The rate that is usually charged by the operators for a return ride from The Stadthuys to A'Famosa is RM10 per trishaw.

The Stadthuys

Built in 1650 as the official residence of Dutch Governors and Deputy Governors, the edifice is a fine example of Dutch architecture, with solid doors and louvred windows. Believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the East, the port-red theme extends to the other buildings around the Town Square and the old clock tower. Preserved in its original structure and form, it now houses the History and Ethnography Museum. On display daily are fine traditional bridal costumes and relics from Melaka's glorious past. Unlike most museums in Malaysia, which give little or no explanation, here it would take a couple of hours to reead your way through the detailed explanations of Melaka's past. Also, within the Stadthuys is the midly interesting Literature Museum, focusing on Malaysian writers. Jonker Walk is well known for its art galleries, antique shops and traders, among them goldsmiths, watch repairers, clog makers and beaded shoemakers, blacksmiths, rattan and bamboo weavers, Chinese traditional medicine merchants and food outlets.
The area has the reputation for supplying authentic antiques and objects d'arts dating back to the early fifties when Malaysians joined the urge to shop for memorabilia of the past. Two well known pioneer antique dealers in Melaka were T.K. Kutty and Hj Abu Bakar. Worth a visit are the antique and second hand shops found at Nos 25, 26 and 55, Jalan Hang Jebat. An enticing display of curios confronts the customer in these outlets and be it after a gentle browse or a methodical search, you may just be rewarded with authentic artefacts such as charcoal burning irons or porcelain and ceramic pieces that can date as far back as 300 years. Victorian memorabilia, furniture and clocks too can be obtained in some of these outlet.

HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE

Cheng Hoon Teng was founded in the 1600s by the Chinese Kapitan Tay Kie Ki alias Tay Hong Yong. During the Portuguese and Dutch eras, Kapitans were appointed chiefs or headmen of the various ethnic communities.In its early years, besides serving the community's religious needs, the temple also functioned as the official administrative centre and a court of justice for the Kapitans.Besides Kapitan Tay, other prominent Kapitans included Li Wei King, Chan Lak Kua and Chua Su Cheong. Kapitan Chua was responsible for rebuilding the temple in 1801 while the Kapitans and Teng Choos after him contributed towards the aesthetic and structural additions of the building.In 1824, the British abolished the Kapitan system and the leader of the Temple, now known as "Teng Choo", assumed some of the Kapitan's responsibilities.Subsequently, a Board of Trustees was formed to look after the temple. The pioneers included included Tun Sir Tan Cheng Lock, who also initiated the Temple’s unique incorporation under an act of Parliament {Cheng Hoon Teng Temple Incorporation Ordinance 1949}. To the locals, the temple is also known as Kebun Datok (Gods' Garden) and Kwan Yin Teng.

Cheng Ho's Cultural Museum

This museum was set up in honour of a Chinese Ming Dynasty admiral called Cheng Ho or Zheng He.This famed explorer made seven voyages of exploration, leaving his mark in the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia between 1405 and 1433. Five of these voyages brought him through Melaka, a port he is said to have founded.These voyages made a significant impact on Melaka's regionally important role in history. As a confidante to the third Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Cheng Ho had a weighty influence on Chinese International Relations of the day.In the mid-15th Century, he was entrusted to bring the Emperor's daughter, Princess Hang Li Po to marry the Sultan of Melaka. The Princess' entourage consisted of several hundred sons of ministers and handmaidens, a group of people who eventually intermarried with locals in Melaka, creating the Baba Nyonya culture.Lately, some interest has been generated about a belief that Cheng Ho kept a warehouse in Melaka. One of the dilapidated buildings in the old part of Melaka town, showing remnants of Ming style architecture, is thought to be the old warehouse in question and is now the site of the Cheng Ho Museum.The exhibition space displays the life and times of the historic Admiral. Rooms like Tea House and Treasure Ship Living Cabin will take you back in time, and offer you a glimpse of Cheng Ho's lifestyle.Studies of the adventures of this Muslim eunuch are fascinating and the social impact of his voyages can still be felt to this day.

Kampung Hulu's Mosque

The mosque, built in 1728 during the Dutch Occupancy, is the oldest mosque in the country. Its unique architectural style is a unique blend of Sumatran, Hindu and Western architecture.All of the building's original wooden structures except the four main pillars and the roof structure were replaced with concrete. Within the mosque compound, you can find the grave of Sayyid Abdullah Al-Haddad, a famous religious teacher, whom many regarded as a "Wali" (Saint).A good way to see the Kampung Hulu Mosque is to include it as part of your walking tour of nearby Jonker Street. The Mosque is set just one street back from the famous street.

Unfortunately, non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the main Mosque building, but this mosque can best be appreciated from the outside anyhow.

St. John's Fort

Hang Li Poh's Well

The well, the oldest in Melaka, was built in 1459 by the followers of Hang Li Po, the Chinese princess who married the Sultan of Melaka. In the olden days, the well never dried up and was the only source of water during the great droughts.In 1511, the Javanese filled the well with poison, and many who drank from it died of the plague. Melaka had just fallen into the hands of Sultan Alauddin Shah of Johor, who teamed up with the sultans of Perak and Pahang, and the Queen of Java. According to the Portuguese historian, Diogo de Couto, many Portuguese soldiers died from drinking the water from the well.In 1677, the Dutch enclosed it with solid brickwalls in a bid to maintain their rights to it. Later, it was turned into a wishing well, which it has remained until today. It is said that whoever throws coins into the well will return to Melaka time and again.

Getting there

Melaka is easily accessible by roads. From Kuala Lumpur, you can take express buses to Melaka at Puduraya Bus Station. The two and half hour journey will cost you around RM7.90. Then, take a cab at an area beside Jalan Hang Tuah where the driver will take you all the way to this well which is situated at the foot of Bukit Cina.

The Maritime Museum

The Museum is constructed after 'Flora De La Mar', the Portuguese ship that sank off the coast of Melaka in its way to Portugal. With its hull laden with invaluable treasures seized from Melaka, the ship was doomed from existence had it not for the efforts to revive its symbolic significance to Melaka's heritage. At the museum, visitor can get a closer look at Melaka from the famed Malay Sultanate of the 14th century to the Portuguese era, the Dutch era and the Bristish era. There are exhibits of foreign ships that had once called at the port of Melaka during the height of its maritime.

St. Paul's Church

Christ Church

Standing exactly as it has always been since 1753, the church is testimony to Dutch's architectural ingenuity. Located next to the Stadhuys, its notable feature is the ceiling, whose beams, over 15m (16yd) long, were each made from a single tree. The 200-year old pews are still in evidence. Over the altar, there is a painting of the Last Supper on glazed tiles and on the floors are tombstones in Armenian script.

St. Francis Xavier's Church

A domineering presence in the skyline of Malacca, this twin-spired neo-gothic structure was built on the site of an old Portuguese church by a French priest, Father Farvé, in 1856, in honour of St. Francis Xavier, a prominent 16th-century Catholic missionary also known as ‘Apostle of the East’. Located on Jalan Laksamana, the church’s finishing touches were completed in 1859 by Father Allard, with the present-day presbytery built in 1874.

St Peter's Church

Built in 1710, the church is currently the oldest functioning Catholic Church in the country. There is also a bell tower which dates all the way back to 1608 and was made in Goa, India. St.Paul's Hill ( A Famosa )

The Portuguese colonised Melaka from 1511 to 1641. The first thing they did was build a fort overlooking the river, calling it A'Famosa. As Melaka was the centre of struggles between super powers of the time, and suffered the constant threat of attack, the A'Famosa fort was critical in Portugal maintaining its colonial foothold in the Far East.

Within the fort walls were housing and food stores, a castle, a meeting room for the Portuguese Council and five churches. A seven-month attack by the Dutch just about destroyed the entire fortress, leaving only the entrance façade and the structure of a church at the top of the hill.Go for a stroll up St. Paul's Hill on a cool late afternoon and wander among the majestic trees and historical remnants. Here, you can almost imagine the glories and miseries of the besieged lives the Portuguese would have led right here all those years ago...

Hang Jebat's Mausoleum

Here lies Hang Jebat who was one of Melaka's famous Five Companions who died a tragic death at the hand of his best friend, Tuah. Prior to the incident, Hang Jebat was seeking avenge on the death of his friend, Hang Tuah, who was framed for treason by those who disliked him. It is said that Hang Tuah had allegedly consorting one of the queen's ladies-in-waiting. Tuah was supposed to be killed for his offence but Bendahara Tun Perak saved him.In the name of "justice", Hang Jebat defied the Sultan until the Ruler could no longer stand his unruly behaviours. The problem was that Hang Jebat could not be defeated as he was armed with the Taming Sari Kris, a dagger reputed to possess magical powers. For this reason, Tun Perak bravely told the Sultan about Hang Tuah's condition and even asked for Hang Tuah's forgiveness to prevent further bloodshed. The Sultan pardoned Hang Tuah and ordered him to eliminate Jebat.During the fight, the duo fought twice to a standstill and had to take a rest, before Hang Tuah was able to grab the Taming Sari from Hang Jebat's hands. He then gave Hang Jebat the Sultan's kris. The furious exchanges continued until Hang Jebat lunged at Hang Tuah but missed. His dagger was deeply implanted into a wooden post.Upon seeing this, Hang Tuah took the opportunity and mortally wounded Hang Jebat in the stomach. It is said that Hang Jebat's body was thrown into the sea, although two fine graves, one here and the other at the Terendak Camp, an army base in the north-west of the state, have been associated with him.

Hang Kasturi's Mausoleum

Hang Kasturi is one of the five great warrior brothers that includes Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Lekir and Hang Lekiu. The five brothers where great warriors during the reign of the Melaka Sultanate especially during the regime of Sultan Mansur Shah (1456-1477). The courage and strength of the five great warriors plus the wisdom of the Bendahara Tun Perak has helped the Melaka Sultanate to expand the Melakan empire up to as far as the Malay Archipelago. Thus, the Melakan empire gained the respects of friends and foes. In the Malay Annals (Sejarah Melaka), Hang Kasturi was set to be the traitor for accusing his brother Hang Tuah without proper investigation. Hang Tuah, who was hidden by the Prime Minister in Ulu Melaka, took revenge by killing Hang Kasturi in such a big battle for being a traitor to the Sultan. However, based on another story known by many people, Hang Jebat was the real traitor who finally died in the arm of Hang Tuah. The structure of the Hang Kasturi's mausoleum was much influenced by the art and architecture from India where there are spaces to put light around the tomb. This tomb is staggered and has medium levels, unlike other tombs which are long and said to be holly. This mausoleum has been gazetted as a historic site.

Malacca new tourist attraction, Menara Taming Sari. It stands tall in the middle of the busy tourist hub surrounded by heritage museums, shopping centres, and the Malacca River. Its peak shaped like a keris.
The air-conditioned viewing cabin, which can accommodate up to 80 people at a time, revolves as it rises from ground level to the top of the tower. It also revolves on its downward journey.

The Youth Museum

Melaka Sultanate Palace

Built based on the description and reference to the palace in 'Sejarah Melayu' (Malay History), the wooden replica houses the Cultural Museum of Melaka. Situated at the foot of St. Paul's Hill, it is the only Malay palace from Melaka's glorious past built with such detail and refinement. The original location of the palace was on to of Melaka Hill (now St. Paul's Hill) overlooking Melaka River and Baazar.

Historical City of Melaka

Melaka is among the third smallest Malaysian state. The state of Malacca is located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula. The capital of the state is Malacca Town and the state is headed by the Governor or Yang di-Pertua Negeri. This historical city received the popular recognition of World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008.
Melaka History
Melaka was founded in 1400 by Parameswara, a young Hindu prince from Palembang. Parameswara fled from the Javanese enemy of his homeland. Under his reign, Melaka grew to be the famous port for trading between the East and the West. It was also the center of spice trade between the Malay and the Indonesian archipelagos. Indians, Arabs, China and Siam peoples, traded tea, cotton, silk, silver, porcelain, ivory, Persian carpets, brassware, perfumes, pearls, incense and opium. Parameswara was also the first Malay prince to embrace Islam; hence, Islam became the official religion of Melaka.
Some 60 years later, the wealth of the State caught attention of the Portuguese and the Dutch. In 1511, the Portuguese, under the command of Alfonso de Albuquerque, conquered Melaka.
In 1641, the Dutch took over Melaka from the Portuguese after a long and fierce battle. In 1795, Melaka was handed over to the British to avoid its capture by the French Revolutionary Armies. The British returned the city to the Dutch in 1808; however, the British soon took it back in trade for Bencoleen, Sumatra.
From 1826, the English East India Company in Calcutta ruled the city, although from 1942 to 1945 the city experienced Japanese occupation too.
After World War II, the anti-colonial sentiment resulted in the proclamation of Independence by Malaysia’s first Prime Minister.
Melaka Culture
The city of Melaka is rich in heritage and culture from their daily lives to the historical landmarks. In front of every house in Melaka are the Malacca Steps.
Melaka is well-known for its food. Some of the traditional Malay dishes include ikan asam pedas, sambal belacan and cencaluk. Belacan, or shrimp paste, is a traditional ingredient used in many dishes, or eaten with rice.
The Nyon-Baba cuisine is also seen in Melaka, which is a mixture of Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, Indian, British and Malay cooking. These dishes are generally spicy. The Devil’s Curry and the Portuguese egg tarts were added to the cuisine by the Portuguese.

Situated on the south-western coast of the Malay Peninsula, Melaka is one of the fourteen states of Malaysia. It lies between the states of Negeri Sembilan and Johor, and it extends over an area of 1,658 kilometers. Melaka is divided into three districts: Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah and Jasin.
The state of Melaka has numerous architectural landmarks that are worth a visit. Influences from the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Chinese, are visible in these architectural landmarks. The Town Hall of Melaka is an exceptional monument made by the Dutch. There are a number of spectacular places of worship, including churches, temples and mosques. The rich Melakan heritage and culture can be seen through various cultural museums throughout the city.

Melaka is easily accessible from all over Malaysia through the North-South Expressway. It is about 2 hours away from Kuala Lumpur and about 3 to 4 hours away from Singapore.
